Zimbabwe could be an interesting destination for imaginative travellers as it has been revealed that the country is prepared to invite tourism back into its borders. Paul Murray, author of Bradt's first Zimbabwean travel guide since an economic crisis in the African nation, has said that the state is "ready, waiting and very eager" to have visitors.
Britons who want to get among the unique wildlife in Africa might be interested in a new tour from Imaginative Traveller. According to the company, explorers may find themselves inspired by the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (Alert), which is to appear in a new television series documenting its efforts to reverse the decline of lions. Alert is a non-profit organisation that aims to create a relationship with all sectors of African society in order to address the problem of dwindling wild lion numbers through sustainable conservation management.
Anyone going on holidays to Africa has been warned not to forget medical evacuation cover in case they should fall ill on their trip. Healthcare services provider Bupa said that half of the evacuations it carries out for medical purposes take place in Africa, with Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zimbabwe all in the top ten. This was for a variety of reasons, including injuries to the spine, eye diseases and heart attacks, but Bupa pointed out that being taken to another country for treatment could be costly, with air ambulances costing anything up to £50,000.
