Welcome to Lima, the ‘City of Kings’. Peru's capital may have officially begun life in 1535, when Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded the city, yet settlements had been scattered through the valley since before the Incas. The city was built atop an existing palace and temples that belonged to the local chief - who had little choice but to move on. Lima was in its prime during the Spanish colonial days and much of the city's attraction now lies in its well-preserved historical centre.
Accommodation
Overnight in a 3* or 4* hotel
Start the day with a tour of Lima - beginning with a panoramic view of the sacred ‘Pucllana Pyramid’, a magnificent ceremonial and archeological centre built in the 4th century A.D. Then, wander through the city’s colonial past, visiting the Cathedral, the Viceroyalty of Peru, Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Government Palace, the City Hall, and more.
Later, visit the Convent of San Francisco, a seventeenth-century architectural complex that includes a church, a convent and a square. The facade of the church, which has an image of the Immaculate Conception painted on it, was carved in stone and is characterized by its Corinthian columns. You will also see the catacombs, a dark chamber found under the church.
You will also visit the Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and history of Peru where you can gather an insight into the country’s vast and varied cultural heritage. Some of the most important legacies at the museum are the monoliths, including the famous Estela of Raimondi, a perfect carved block of stone representing an ancient god bearing a walking stick which dates back to 1000 BC.
This afternoon, we recommend that you spend the afternoon walking around the beachside district of Barranco where streets are lined with traditional casonas (colonial-style houses), and relax before your evening out at the Magic Water Circuit – a spectacular water and light show.

This morning, you will head over to famous Lake Titicaca for a boat excursion, which includes a visit to the ‘Uros Floating Islands’, a small community that has lived on these reed Islands for decades. Centuries ago the small indigenous Uros tribe conceived the islands as a way to isolate and protect themselves from rival tribes, the Collas and the Incas. The Uros people harvested the reeds in the shallows of the lake, bundled them together tightly and built floating island platforms complete with reed houses and canoes, creating their own little world. After strolling around the floating Islands, you continue your journey towards ‘Amantani Island’, where you will spend the rest of the day and the night.
You will be welcomed by a native family at the harbour, who you will be staying with later that evening! First however, spend the afternoon exploring the islands - walk up to the highest point to see the Pachamama ancient ruins and enjoy stunning views of the Lake from this lookout point.
After an amazing sunset you will meet up with your host families and head to their homestay – a traditional mud brick house - where you will be invited to dinner followed by an Andean party. After breakfast, you will say goodbye to your local family and return to the harbor where you will set sail towards ‘Taquile Island’, a traditional Quechua speaking community full of ancient agricultural terraces and ruins dating back to pre-Inca times. The Taquile population was relatively isolated from the mainland until 1950s, and the notion of community and family is still very strong among them.
The weaving tradition of the Taquile Island goes back to early civilisations, keeping elements of pre-Inca Andean cultures alive. All weaving is done on pre-Inca fixed and pedal looms. The most characteristic garments are the so-called ‘Chullo, a knitted hat with an earflap, and ‘The Calendar Waistband’, depicting the annual cycles connected to ritual and agricultural activities.

Imaginative Traveller trips and adventure travel in general can be quite demanding and there are risks and hazards that are inherent in such trips. Long driving days can sometimes be uncomfortable and tiring. Many of the places we visit are off the beaten track and so do not have the infrastructure that we are accustomed to in western society. Accommodation can vary greatly in standards and when wild camping on an Overland trip we rely entirely on our own provisions.
You will have the opportunity to take part in many exciting activities and excursions, some of which are included whilst others are optional (i.e. hiking the Inca Trail, trekking to see Mountain Gorillas) these require a certain level of fitness, so it’s important that you read through the trip notes thoroughly and make your own conclusions as to whether you feel that you are fit and healthy enough to enjoy this trip to its fullest. Some activities may have higher risks than you are used to and you must judge whether or not you wish to, or have the physical ability to take part. All travellers are also required to carry their own bag and lift it into storage areas, get on and off public transport or if on an Overland trip - be able to manage the 2-foot step on and off the Overland truck.
Weather conditions in certain areas can also make physical activity more challenging. This also applies to our trips that travel at altitude.
It is extremely rare for us to have to refuse anyone a space on our trips for medical reasons. If at the time of booking you have any concern at all about a medical condition that may prevent you from participating fully in the trip, please let your travel agent or Imaginative Traveller know as soon as possible. If upon disclosure, our operator is of the opinion that the trip is not suitable for you, then we reserve the right to cancel your booking or alternatively to limit your participation in certain activities.
Whilst we don’t want to put anyone off experiencing one of our trips, we ask that you read through the trip notes for the trip you have selected carefully and realistically self assess your ability to complete the trip as described. Please consult with your Dr and/or us if you have any doubts.
A positive attitude and an open mind are just as important as your ability to get involved and fully participate on your group trip.
